Homemade Bookmarks to Boost Literacy

Words I never, in a million years, thought I would say:

We are homeschooling.

But I also didn’t imagine I’d be living in Idaho during a worldwide shutdown/uprising. And yet, here we are. This year has been unlike any other and like many of you, I’ve found myself coping in some unexpected ways. There is not much I can control but I am capable of fostering a culture of love, joy, peace, patience, and goodness within my own four walls.

And so, we’ve turned to books! From picture books, to encyclopedias, and everything in between, we have been reading up a storm. The bulk of our homeschool learning is literature based so we have stacks and stacks of books to read; both together and solo. With kiddos ranging from 2 to 8 years old, I needed a way to keep them occupied as well as engaged.

Bookmarks to the rescue! We made a simple template, decorated them with drawings and stickers, then into the laminator they went. I don’t think it matters what your age, watching a simple piece of paper turn into a shiny, sturdy piece of art is exciting. Don’t even try to deny it. We also added some yarn and beads for a bit of flair and voila! New bookmarks for all the books (plus a few to share as gifts).

The bookmarks have made our read-aloud time even more exciting as each child has their own special marker. If you need a cheap and easy literature activity, why not make some, too? Grab a template below and create your own masterpieces for your favorite titles!
